Victorian England

Here´s Tower Bridge soon after its completion in 1894 with the Tower of London in the background. Not many cars to be seen!

This is the best site on Victorian England but you will have to go carefully from the front page to find the content. For example to find out more about the railways click on technology and then scroll down to the railways section.

Here´s another site on the life of the upper classes.

London as capital of the Empire was one of the most important cities in the world at this time.

Child labour was, of course, a feature of work at this time, especially in the mines and factories.

Meanwhile, this is a good British and World history site with more good links for the Victorian age.

Life stories of famous people are available here . You have to do a search to find the person you are looking for.

The BBC´s website is one of the biggest and best in the world. Their Victorian history section is here.

History of the Universe

From the Big Bang to the Present Day.

Photography of Yann Bertrand

You may have seen the book "The Earth from Above" ("La Tierra vista desde Cielo"). This webpage has many of the photos like the one above of mountaineers on Mt. Blanc which is the highest mountain in the EU. Each photo is accompanied by text in French, English and Spanish. If you want to save a photo on your computer you have to go to the bottom of the page and click on 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. There are some excellent photographs of farm animals and horses here. Also there are other interesting links on the homepage.

Encyclopedia

Wikipedia is the best online encyclopedia with 780,000 articles in English. For example here´s the article on Alexander Fleming.

Tambien en Español.

Google Earth

Google Earth is a great new tool for Geography and Science. Once installed on your computer(click on Get Google Earth) you can zoom in and out to get satellite imagery and maps from all over the world. It is still in the early stages of development but there are great detailled pics from many cities including Madrid. For example, here is the Eiffel Tower with the River Seine running alongside, the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and above Central London and St. Peter´s Basilica in Rome.
